It all began when Susie Franklin walked into a store named "Fanciworks" in downtown Lodi, CA back in the early 1980s. To her, this store was "Heaven on Earth" with its rolls of stickers, colorful artwork & interior design elements and high quality toys, books, games & stuffed animals - working here would be her dream job! The long and sometimes tedious path Susie took to getting her dream job has uniquely qualified her to create "Gifts from the Heart of Elk Grove" to be not only a fun and fanciful gift shop, but also a place for celebration, education, creativity and community! Unfortunately, "Fanciworks" closed before Susie ever had a chance to work there. Fortunately, the gift store "Penny Lane" took it's place in Lodi's Downtown Mall and Susie worked there while attending Delta College and U.C. Davis. In addition, she was also invited to work at neighboring store "Chelsey's Clothes for Cute Kids." These positions gave Susie a great opportunity to learn the behind the scenes workings of the retail industry. In 1994, Susie earned a California Multiple Subject Teaching Credential and immediately began teaching kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade in Lodi, CA. The same year, she married Thomas Roeser. When they moved to Elk Grove in 1998 she began teaching kindergarten at Elitha Donner Elementary School as well as teaching a variety of classes for the Always Learning department of the Elk Grove Unified School District. Her years in the education profession have prepared her for working with children and their families. She has spent years of finding creative ways to make learning fun and memorable for her students. 2003 marked the birth of Susie's son, and 2006 her daughter. Being a full time mom has truly opened Susie's eyes to both the wants and needs of the many young families that call Elk Grove home. 2006 was also the year Susie joined Heart 2 Heart Moms - a group that would hugely influence her personal growth as well as providing opportunities to hone her hospitality skills on a larger scale. Susie served on the steering committee for this group of 80-100 women as the Special Events Coordinator for several years before stepping down to let a new generation of mom's take the lead so she could seriously pursue starting Gifts from the Heart of Elk Grove.
